Tips for Improving MemoryMemory can be affected by many factors. These include lack of use, high stress, lack of rest, poor nutrition, poor health, and lack of exercise, among others. Everyone experiences some forgetfulness. Even the sharpest brain can forget a name or directions. It is true that our memory ability tends to decline as we age. However, a healthy older adult should be able to recall quite well, particularly when given cues and prompts. Here are some daily strategies and tips to assist you with keeping your memory sharp! 1. Practice! Use your brain. Learning games, and memory exercises, like the ones on brainTivity keep your brain active, and expand your skills. 2. Identify! Recognize what types of information and situations that you tend to be forgetful about. Practice and work on these areas. 3. Sleep! Get lots of rest. A tired brain will not process as efficiently as a well rested brain. 4. Healthy food! Eat a good well balanced diet. 5. Rehearse. Information that you need to remember will be recalled better if you repeat the information to yourself several times. Such as remembering names when meeting new people. 6. Use memory aids. Lists or notes with daily activities are very useful to assist your memory and free up your brain to concentrate on other tasks. 7. Routine. Develop routines and fixed places for placement of items such as car keys. Your brain will develop a subconscious process to remember where these objects are. This will then free up the conscious part of your brain to learn new information. 8. De-stress! Mistakes and forgetfulness occur when you are stressed. Learn how to relax and remove stress from your life. 9. Exercise. Engaging in a regular physical exercise routine increases blood flow and oxygen through the body and increases learning and memory ability.
